Love Not Fear
1 John 4: Let us love one another, for love comes from God. This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. We have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. We know and rely on the love God has for us. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because he first loved us.
The Spirit of God is love. We demonstrate our saving faith in God by loving our brothers and sisters. Our world would be so much better if all obeyed the commandment to love one another. The gospels call for the forgiveness of sin and the salvation of all is consistent with God’s radical love. We enter into eternal life by taking up God’s call to love and putting our complete trust in Jesus. We are, all of us deserving of hopeless misery, but a way has been made through Jesus that all of creation may be reconciled to God, the creator-king of the universe. The Kingdom of God is inaugurated in the cross of Christ. No words or thoughts can do honor to the astonishing love of God towards us, we could not add a thing to His love and grace. It is perfect in and of itself. A truly loving person is a perfect Christian. Love powers his soul, and sets him on being of help to all in need. A man without love always lives badly.
There is no fear in love. I know God loves me; I could never fear Him. I see God as my loving and gracious Father in Heaven. Through His Spirit, I carry with me a deep sense of God’s grace wherever I go. I try to spread it, to proclaim God’s love of all in word and deed. The perfect and fullness of love, which I have not fully received, but have merely glimpsed casts out all fear. Fear is contrary to the boundless and unconditional love and grace of God. No heart full of the love of God can be gloomy. This love must exclude fear because that brings misery and is inconsistent with the happiness of one who continually enjoys his God. To fear and worry is to step out of God and make myself sovereign. When I embrace the hope and joy that God provides through Jesus I can only feel God’s love and smile. Life is good. Life is a miracle. With God, all things are possible that leaves nothing out.
Rabbi Yehuda Berg: The heart cannot contain both fear and love at the same time. When our hearts contain fear, we cannot love. Fear is worrying that we won’t get what we need. Love is about sharing with the other person. When we are walking with love in our heart, living with love, then we are in an affinity with the Creator and there is no need for fear. Love is the strongest of all energies.
If you are uncertain where you stand with Jesus even though you have experienced God’s love, yet in your heart and soul fear and worry is in attendance you have not received the abiding fullness of the love of God. Don’t despair; don’t panic for you are on the way of salvation and not far from the kingdom of heaven. He who is not yet perfect in love may in an instant know God’s love; God can say in a moment, I will, be well; and immediately his leprosy will depart. It is God through his love and grace that removes and casts out all fear. We just need to come to God and God will accept us.
Mother Teresa: “I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love. Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier.”
